Mr. Kisi Tola (age 38) and his wife (age 30) Kasech Belay, who live in Gudane Dadu kebele of Hababo Guduru district, are among the agro forestry promoters who have planted various fruit trees. Currently, they have planted: coffee (87 seedlings), papaya (8), apple (7), avocado (3), and mango (2). Especially, coffee and papaya have been harvested for the past three years (phases), of which the majority was consumed at household level. When asked as to why they did not sell their products to market, than own consumption, Mrs. Kasech replies: “we still are making business even if we consume ourselves; because, we could have invested too much money to purchase these costly fruits had we bought them from market.â€Â They tell that they are also expecting other fruits to mature in the forthcoming years, since most of them need relatively lengthy period (7 years for avocado, for example). Especially, they are eagerly looking for apple’s harvest due to the sensational promotion with impressive motto: “one apple a day keeps your doctor away!â€
As far as the management aspect is concerned, all family members (including their 5 children, of which the first 3 elders in school) are making their own labor contributions: hoeing, weeding, watering, deflowering, etc. They have also dug shallow well in order to water these fruits as necessary. Given these potentials, therefore, further expertise coaching and capacity building trainings were being provided by Gurmuu for this as well as other analogous households.
