A case of a successful SHG woman
Adde Abelu Gemeda, 35 years old, is a mother of seven children. She lives in Lalistu Loya locality, Hababo-Guduru. Her husband is engaged in a traditional carpentry work to generate income for the family. She used to brew local liquor to supplement the family income. In spite of these, their income was meager that they could not feed their children and fulfill school fees.
She gets introduced to the SHG approach by Gurmuu’s project staff and get interested in it. About 20 poor women were selected to be organized into SHG among which she was one in 2007. The name of her group is Gudatu which is to mean “toddlerâ€. She has been trained with her peers for 5 days on SHG principles and concepts. Then she was inspired by the SHG approach and determined to contribute her part for the progress of the group. Before joining the SHG she has been suffering from long term food insecurity with her family. With grief-stricken face Abelu remind the past local money lender’ exploitation with exorbitant interest rate and social deprivation she faced and assertively narrate how the situation is gradually reversed.
“After joining the group I have started saving and accessed credit with fair interest rates from my group as well as from micro finance institution. I also get various capacity building trainings on saving & credit, business skill development, nutrition and social issues like HIV/AIDS prevention and family planning. In the first year I bought ewe for rearing, additional hand tools to strengthen my husband carpentry efficiency and engage in petty trade with Birr 1,000.00 loan from the MFI. In the second year I successfully repaid the credit and able to buy heifer. Then I got second round loan of Birr 1,500.00 for bull purchase. Currently I and my group members have developed customer loyalty with WASASA MFI and individually got a loan amount of Birr 2,000.00 for third round. I have purchased fertilizer and seed for farm diversification. Unlike previous years I am expecting five type of crop (wheat, peas, maize, sesame and niger-seed) harvest mainly grown in the area from own small farm land and sharecropping farm land with other farmers.â€
She witnessed some socio-economic improvements in her life. She is able to diversify sources of family income, developed culture of saving, able to send five children to school and reduced the number of food insecure months. After joining the SHG, she was socially empowered and able to understand the importance of having manageable family size. Hence, she started using implant contraceptive method for family planning. In nutshell, Adde Abelu is on a track of assertiveness and entrepreneurship. Currently, she is a woman who seek and ready to make profit out of available opportunities to escape poverty rather than waiting for fortune. Her plan is to fully depend on her own working capital, purchase more oxen thereby expand her farm to produce high value crops using irrigation and closely work with her SHG in much endeavor for better livelihoods. She certainly speak that “those dark days will never come again! God bless Gurmuu and the supporters for giving us this chanceâ€
