Abdi Jiregna Cluster Level Association (CLA) is established in Gobu kebele of Guduru District. Its name, “Abdi Jiregna†in Afaan Oromoo has a literal meaning of “hope of lifeâ€, and reflects the members’ desire for success to promote their lives through this CLA. The CLA has eight SHGs as members and the total of women under these SHGs is 164. This CLA came into existence on the cause of this project and has accomplished tremendous tasks that have generated results. It has established two new SHGs, has been playing a strengthening and supportive roles for the SHGs under it. Socially it resolved conflicts between its constituent SHG members. As they mentioned during the FGD, local elders and ordinary neighbors have tried and failed to reconcile several times. They attribute this success to the trainings, and advices they get and that improved their skills and patience in doing things effectively.
The CLA has also been playing the linkage role between women, their SHGs and the local governance. Its lobbying role for example has enabled the CLA to acquire a site for construction of office on which they have already built. They said, “We are working for our community and the working environment need to be conducive for us; we should not gather under tree shades or we should not be hit by the sun rays, frost or rainâ€. By discussing with kebele administration, they have been trying to arrange Functional Adult Education (FAE) for their member SHGs so that women can attend education to improve their lives and to make life easy for them. This was arranged using the opportunity that comes through government structure that FAE is to be facilitated. The CLA has made such analyses to optimally utilize opportunities for its members and this can partially, if not wholly, shows the project has impacted the CLA through its capacity building interventions. They have well recognized not only their responsibilities but they also make well articulated statements that show the level of their understanding to claim their rights. When asked whether they have a byelaw, one member carefully pondered and said, “Abdiin Jirenya seera duwwaa miti, seenaas qaba†which is literally to mean “Abdi Jiregna has not only a byelaw, but also it has a basic story on which it is basedâ€.
Economically as well, the CLA has played a coordination role to link its member SHGs to external loan providers, initiated SHG members to produce more, and has facilitated the organization of bazaar for their produces. Both SHGs and the CLA have generated income from the sales of these products through direct sales and bids.
