Gurmuu has implemented a project titled “Empowerment of the Siiqqee Oromo Women Institution in Promoting Human Rights, Peacebuilding and Inclusive Dialogue”. The project has been implemented in partnership with the International republican Institute from January to December 2022. The underlying assumption of the project is that the emergence of modern world system (religion, science and technology, and state system) have negatively affected the status and practice of the Siiqqee. The institution, among others, lacks institutional autonomy, enforcement power, popularity/legitimacy, and weak engagement in the highly demanding peace and dialogue process in the country. Gurmmu has carried out a series of advocacy initiatives with aim of influencing stakeholders to recognize the independence and importance of meaningful participation of Haadha Siiqqees in peacebuilding, conflict resolution and human right issues. The project comprises of components that include capacity building (trainings and experience sharing), awareness creation, dialogue and advocacy.
To create awareness, concern and leverage support, as well as to share detailed information with key stakeholders on the Haadha Siiqqee’s role in conflict resolution, peacebuilding and promotion of human rights; Gurmuu has conducted three (each one day) advocacy symposiums from December 08-10, 2022 with key stakeholders including policy makers and implementers drawn from Federal and the Regional government offices. A total of 109 participants from Federal and the Regional government offices, including scholars, prominent community figures and civil society organizations representatives have been impacted during the three advocacy symposiums. 36 participants have attended each of the advocacy symposium on average.
