Badhasa Legesse, 36 years of age, was one of the inhabitant and beneficiaries of Hamile WaSH project. He lives in Walkitumma Village and he has five children (of which one is girl and four are boys. Two of his children attend school). Badhasa has attended primary education until 6th grade. He tells that despite the different awareness creation forums by the community health extension workers (CHEWs), most community members including him were reluctant to practice sanitation activities. He exclaims, “Just to get relief from regular nagging of CHEWs, I constructed one nominal dry latrine. After Gurmuu’s appearance at our village, however, WaSH realized with its full packages which we all were happy of it and initiated me to transform my household pit latrine.â€
He added, “Previously, the CHEWs simply passed orders to wash our hands and body while they hardly told the source of the water to do so. However, in Gurmuu’s project not only educated and demonstrated the importance of good personal hygiene; but also availed the necessary services as well: washing basin, shower rooms, latrine slabs, communal dry latrine and motivating individual/backyard latrines. Due to the uninterrupted behavioral-change-oriented trainings provided by Gurmuu, I first changed my attitude and finally my former latrine: re-constructed one ventilated dry latrine with its accessories (like soap and water for critical time hand wash) and shower room with its drainage system separately. Thus, Gurmuu awarded me with latrine slab at the presence of various stakeholders. Now, my latrine/ shower room as you can see seems comparable to small but cute house!â€

Badhasa also tells that he is encouraging his peers, neighbors and other community members in general towards environmental sanitation as well: “we have adopted good slogan: ‘let’s learn from cats how much an open field defection is shame! That is why our village is becoming open- defecation-free space; potentially visited as exemplary village; and hence hosted local government’s experience sharing session for analogous community groups.†Thanks to Gurmuu and its supporters!.
