During the designing phase of Hamile WaSH, unlike the other schemes, cattle trough was deliberately left aside. The rationale for such exclusion was not because animals already have where they can drink water from, but due to the uncertainty of the spring potential to support these animals as well the lack of communal land to construct the facility. Then, having intensively discussed with the beneficiary community, the concern of sustainability has become shared among all members. It was then that the community highly participated in and becomes committed to the micro-watershed activities facilitated by Gurmuu around the spring sources.

The micro-watershed (conservation activities) was one of the key components under the WatSan project. It encompasses activities which range from knowledge building to physical-biological conservation.

Pictures: showing the various conservation activities undertaken around Hamile Water supply source

As depicted in the above pictures, conservation works were implemented around Hamile spring source which include: planting of 1,371 water friendly trees, soil bund construction with vetiver as stabilization, protected a land area of 600m2 and constructed 501 meters long cut-off drainage. Consequently, the spring yield potential of Hamile spring has been raised from 0.25 lit/sec to 0.32 lit/sec within two years of accomplishing such conservation efforts. Being motivated by such achievement the beneficiary communities are encouraged to expand conservation efforts in the future. One of the beneficiaries, Berhanu File clearly said about this success:

I have been utilizing from Hamile source before it was capped. The water has no good smell and taste. We have to wait for almost half an hour to fill a Jeri-cane (the water flows almost in drops). The surrounding land is bare, unfertile/eroded by wind and rain during dry and rainy seasons. Even the color of the soil around the source which was red can be visible from distant. When Gurmuu taught as to plant trees and excavate trenches around the source to increase the water flow, I was one among the members to openly oppose the idea saying, what can we add for God has created the water small! But today, with Gurmuu’s teaching I have seen a miracle that the water volume has significantly increased. The taste of the water is similar to what you people have in the bottle! I am now one who will going to advice and promote such conservation activities. We are also thinking as a community to construct a cattle trough which we were in doubt to do in the past as a result of small capacity of the source. I proudly proclaim: we have already learned that the more we plant trees around our spring, the more water yield we can harvest! God bless the supporters who helped us to know these deeds!
