Mr. Misgana Jima is a beekeeper in Guddane Qobbo kebele and a member of Ref Tole Beekeepers’ Association (with 20 members which meet every month). He is now 38 years old and a father of four children. Currently, Misgana has a total of 106 beehives: 70 traditional, 20 improved traditional (with two gates); 15 transitional and 1 improved. He tells the need to unconditionally shift from traditional to transitional/modern beehives, since the latter enables persistent honey production with single bee colony, for about 5-10 years. Moreover, he confirms, while traditional beehives can support maximum 6 layers (harvested only about 5 kg), the modern ones have the capacity to keep up to 30 layers at a time (30-35 kg harvest).
His yearly honey selling, as to his own estimation, is about 100 kg/year (each kg sold with 30-40 Birr and yearly sale of about 3,000.00-4,000.00 Birr). As to where he sells, common buyers are local traders in nearby towns and/or just at house level. Had there been bulk production and transport to relatively big towns, Misgana remarks, the price could have been rewarding better.
